Kabuto Yakushi first appears in the Naruto manga and anime series during the Chunin Exams arc. He is introduced as a seemingly unassuming medical ninja allied with Orochimaru, acting as his right-hand man and spy.

Throughout Naruto Shippuden, Kabuto's role evolves dramatically. He is initially characterized by his exceptional medical ninjutsu skills and vast knowledge of the human body. He displays strategic intelligence, often analyzing situations and manipulating events to Orochimaru's advantage.

Following Orochimaru's defeat, Kabuto absorbs Orochimaru's remains and undergoes a transformation, gaining access to Orochimaru's abilities and progressively becoming more powerful. He masters the Impure World Reincarnation (Edo Tensei) technique, summoning deceased powerful ninjas to fight for him during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Ultimately he becomes a key antagonist whose actions trigger a global conflict.

Kabuto eventually undergoes a character change during the war. Due to the influence of Izanami, a powerful genjutsu, he begins to reflect on his past actions and question his identity. After the war he dedicates his life to caring for war orphans at the same orphanage where he was once raised, attempting to atone for his wrongdoings.
